Green Street Methodist Church
Green Street Church was built in 1859 and became part of the Aberdare Circuit in 1873. Later in 1978 it was subsumed by Mid Glamorgan Mission. The property is now a Grade II listed buildingwith traditional pews and large pipe organ. The chapel is located in the centre of the town of Aberdare and surrounded by car parks. Several years ago the main doors were replaced by modern glass ones in an attempt to encourage passers-by to look into the church
Even though membership consisted mainly of elderly worshippers, there are always volunteers available to clean the church and to take part in regular and “one-off” events like the annual Daffodil Festival, when the church is bedecked with thousands of potted daffodils, each placed in remembrance of a loved one. At Christmas many members take part in ” Christmas the Story” organised by the local Church in Wales.
The church holds regular weekly events, Book Club, Knit & Natter and The Hub , which is attended by 45 – 50 local people, not all members of Green Street. The Hub meetings include the singing of hymns and listening to a speaker. This form of outreach has resulted in several new members attending Green Street church for Sunday worshipGreen Street members support the local Food Banks regularly and is in the process of collecting items in aid of Ukraine. The church is used regularly by several local organisations and a local choir uses the church for choir practice
